Schools and Education

Within Schenectady there are many schools and educational facilities for pre-k all the way up to a master’s degree. Schenectady City School District operates 16 elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school. Brown School is a private elementary and middle school providing instruction to approximately 300 students. Schenectady also has two catholic schools; St. Madeleine Sophie School for grades PreK-8 and Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons for grades 6-12.

Located downtown is the beautiful liberal arts college, Union College. The college offers courses in arts, sciences, literature, and foreign languages in addition to ABET-accredited degrees in computer engineering, bioengineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Schenectady is also home to SUNY Schenectady County Community College, a two-year school known for its culinary arts department and School of Music.

There is no shortage of delicious dining options in Schenectady. Downtown you’ll find local favorites like Johnny’s, Slidin’ Dirty, Bombers Burrito Bar, Tara Kitchen, and Katie O‘Byrnes Restaurant. If you’re looking for a quick bite or some coffee, stop by the Happy Cappuccino, Liza’s of Schenectady, or Ambitions. Moon and River café is just a minute from the Edison Apartments and offers a casual environment to enjoy while drinking coffee and trying the healthy, vegetarian friendly menu.

Commute Times

Schenectady is centrally located, making commutes to nearby Albany, Troy, Clifton Park and Saratoga Springs short and easy! Commute times by car for major surrounding cities include: 10 minutes to Niskayuna, 20 minutes to Clifton Park, 26 minutes to Albany, 31 minutes to Troy and 40 minutes to Saratoga Springs.
